Autumn 1 highlights
English
During Autumn 1 in Year 5, we spent our English lessons studying The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe by Lewis Crroll. Learenrs loved meeting the new characters and the magical elements that were added to the story. We researched a range of mythical creatures and included these new characters when writing our own versions of the story set in Narnia.
As part of our computing unit, we learn about the importance of collaboration and that people are able to work on the same project at the same time, even if they are not near each other. Learners were set the task of creating an information pressentation about famous landmarks but were only able to communicate by using the chat function. Although it was a challenge, Year 5 really enjoyed this new way of working together.
Focus on Computing
A look back at last year...
This week Year 5 had a visit from an expert who talked about, and showed us, different animals which live in the rainforest. Children were allowed to touch and hold some of the creatures and learned about their importance in the eco-system.

Visit from 'Bugs n Stuff'
To enhance our learning about the rainforest, Year 5 welcomed Andrew from 'Bugs n Stuff'. He talked to the learners about the wildlife that lives in the rainforest. He enthused and excited Year 5 by bringing animals from the rainforst into Marsden.
Year 5 Careers Week
This week (beginning 30th January) Year 5 have taken part in a Careers week. We have been very fortunate to work with Nelson and Colne College and their Sports and Hair and Beauty departments. Lecturers from these departments came into school to deliver sessions for our learners, who thoroughly enjoyed taking part and spending time thinking about a range of careers that are open to them. The week ended with us visiting Nelson and Colne and spending time using their art facilaties and digital media suite.
We also heard from a Marsden parent, who came into school to speak to our learners about his role and the possible career pathways that were availiable for anyone interested in working within the areas of medicine and computing.
Thank you to those who gave up their time to work with us this week, we are all very grateful.
Year 5 will be taking part in this fantastic musical event at Blackburn King George's Hall in March 2023. The children will be learning a range of songs in preparation for the event and will even have some extra music lessons led by the LETS GO SING team.
